Carne and Cordero Empanadas
Moroccan Salad made with couscous, quinoa, garbanzo beans, leeks, celery, carrots, olives, apricot, almond, and olive oil
Beignets, served with caramel sauce
In early March, my dining companion and I visited The Damel, a casual restaurant serving food from Argentina, Brazil, and Senegal on Broadway near 13th in Downtown Oakland, for the first time. We tried a few things: two types of empanadas, the Moroccan Salad, and beignets.
The Carne empanada was made with halal ground beef, olive oil, onion, garlic, tomato, pepper, olive, and spices, while the Cordero was made with halal lamb, olive oil, garlic, ginger, onion, jalapeƱo, cumin, curry, carrot, mint, and spices. The empanadas were prepared perfectly and had a crispy outside. You can tell they pay attention to detail with the added branding on the folded side of the empanadas. The Moroccan Salad, which was made with couscous, quinoa, garbanzo beans, leeks, celery, carrots, olives, apricot, almond, and olive oil, was also quite good. It had more dimension than a typical couscous salad. We also liked the beignets, which were warm and crispy.
I would definitely stop by The Damel in the future. If you've been, what would you recommend trying?
