Clam Chowder in a sourdough bread bowl
In early June, I found myself in a touristy part of San Francisco known as Fisherman's Wharf around lunchtime. As I was looking for a place to eat, I thought I was going to end up at In-N-Out, but instead surprised myself by visiting Boudin Bakery on Jefferson and between Mason and Taylor instead. Like Hot Cookie, Boudin is a San Francisco institution, known for making The Original San Francisco Sourdough™ since 1849. Their bakeries sell a variety of breads, pastries, soups, and sandwiches, as well as have sourdough bears and turtles on display.
I've visited Boudin at other locations over the years, either when I was new in town or when my mom was visiting. This time, I got the usual — New England clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl — which was perfect for a cool, windy day in the city. The sourdough was well-baked, tangy, and soft in the ways I expected and was the perfect vessel for the tasty clam chowder.
I would definitely return in the future, when it's starting to get cold out or when I have a friend in town. It's hard to beat a meal where you can eat the bowl...
