Eat in Oakland: Golden Lotus Vegetarian

Spicy Noodle Soup with lemongrass flavor, tofu, rice noodles, vegetarian "ham" cake, and fried bean curd

Vegan Thai Iced Tea

Golden Lotus Vegetarian is a not-so-hidden gem tucked away in Oakland's downtown on the corner of Franklin and 13th, just off of Broadway. Albeit rather modest on the outside, they serve vegetarian and vegan Vietnamese and Chinese food that is nothing short of appetizing. Many of their dishes are completely meatless or feature expertly-created meat alternatives.

I've only tried the Spicy Noodle Soup the two times I've visited, which features all the traditional fixtures that you'd expect in a bowl of bún bò huế, served with a side of sprouts, sliced jalapenos, and fresh basil. The soup has a broth that is just the right about of spicy and very flavorful; adding Sriracha or hoisin sauce is unnecessary. It's the perfect dish to warm you up on a cold day, or to try on a hot day for weather-resistant soup fanatics like myself. On my last visit, I tried a glass of vegan Thai iced tea, which is as delicious as the non-vegan kind you're probably familiar.

Golden Lotus has very affordable prices and even serves a popular lunch buffet for under $10 during the week. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone who not only loves Vietnamese or Chinese food, but also loves getting in touch with their inner herbivore.
