The Bicycle Profiles: Tracy and Lady

Want to see more of Tracy and her daughter? Here ya go!

What's your name? What do you do? Where do you live?
My name is Tracy, I teach Bikram yoga and am a registered nurse. I also take care of my baby girl, Lady. We just moved to South Berkeley off of Telegraph.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
My bike(s) are family members and lifelines to the way I want to interact with the world. I've got history and stories and love with both of them.

When did you start riding?
I learned to ride as a kid, but took it up as a means of transport and recreation as an adult in 2005. I was living in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time and had a dreamy boyfriend that liked to ride. So we did. The love for bike-riding and confidence I gained learning to ride on city streets stuck, even though the relationship did not (obviously).

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's a great way to experience your community. You ride around, you see somewhere/one you want to check out, you follow your nose, you stop. I also like not having to wait on or run for the bus! And I ride so Lady and I can hang out together and have a good time.

The Bicycle Profiles: Heather

If you've been following the blog for a while, you know I've got a thing for biking. I even started a bike series way back in October of 2011 and resurrected it in May of last year. Well, I'm happy to announce that the fourth installment of the series is finally here and it's featuring none other than a blog veteran and loyal follower.

What's your name? What do you do? Where do you live?
Heather. I twerk as an editorial intern at Chronicle Books in the Food and Lifestyle Departments. For the moment, I'm living in the Inner Richmond where the GGP is five minutes to the south and the Presidio is five minutes to the north, the Asian food is good, and young families are raised. Clement Street rules.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
My bike is my #1.

When did you start riding?
I got this used bike circa January 2009 -- right around the time I realized getting to Ici Ice Cream is faster by bike than by bus, feet, or unicycle.

Why do you ride?
Biking compresses the geographical landscape into manageable chunks to travel and get from place to place. It's also affordable, sustainable, and often times efficient and convenient. Ultimately, I bike for adventure and autonomy, travel and pleasure.

Want to be a part of the series? Let's make it happen.

The Bicycle Profiles: Tami

Remember that series I started in Berkeley back in October featuring stylish cyclists? Well, it's back... and just in time for National Bike Month! In the next few weeks, I hope to share a few cyclists from Los Angeles with you lovely readers. (Yes, people actually do ride bikes in the car mecca that is L.A.) Use this series as an inspiration to start riding a bike for everyday use and as a guide to bike-friendly dressing. Without further ado, let's continue the series with Tami.

What’s your name, occupation, and place of residence?
Tami, web product manager, Santa Monica

Describe your relationship with your bike.
I love my Silver Fox, as I call her. We share a need for speed. I love riding around Santa Monica on our 30+ miles of bike lanes and the beach path to the South Bay.

When did you start riding?
When I was a kid, but I bought my first bike as an adult five years ago when I moved to Santa Monica to enjoy the city better.

Why do you ride?
To get exercise and spend time with friends outdoors. I also love beating the traffic with my man-powered vehicle.

These photos were taken at Roxbury Park in Beverly Hills.

Live in Los Angeles and want to be a part of the series? Let's make it happen.

The Bicycle Profiles: Madison

What's your name, occupation, and place of residence?
Madison, student, Berkeley.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
My bike is a short, pink mountain bike adorned with BSC stickers. I named her Annie because she's adopted (from Craig's List for 90 bucks) and I did a lot to fix her up - new wheels, greased chains, etc. In May, Annie got hit by a truck (not me, though... I fell off) and her front wheel was almost bent in half. She was out of commission until I had time after finals to fix her up at Mike's Bikes.

Sometimes I hate my bike because it's so short and even going down hills my stout little wheels go more slowly than everyone else's and sometimes, while going up hills, which is inherently harder (especially on Annie), is exacerbated when the chains get stuck. However, my bike serves its purpose and for that I really appreciate and love it. It's a love/hate relationship. It's also really heavy and annoying to lift up stairs to lock it up. Lastly, because it's not the best bike by any means, I'm not too worried about it when I leave it locked up somewhere.

When did you start riding?
I learned how to ride a two-wheeler bike when I was six, but wasn't into riding until college and found out about Critical Mass.

Why do you ride?
I like going fast and getting stuff done in less time. My bike is more practical than recreational, but when I'm home, I like to ride at the beach, or like I said before, Critical Mass (Crank Mob, FMLY Ride, etc.)

Where does it take you?
Around Berkeley.

Where do you want to go?
I just want to explore and not care about where I'm going and really just ride meditatively for the sake of riding.

The Bicycle Profiles: Eve

I did it again: I started a new blog series called The Bicycle Profiles. Based on Dmitry Gudkov's amazing #BikeNYC portrait series, this is about people and their relationships with their bikes. If you are a long-time reader of this blog, my Twitter, or you just know me in person, you know my ideal method of transport is by bicycle. In the way that The Plaid Project was an ode to my favorite article of clothing, this series is an ode to my favorite way to get around town. I'll open up the series with Eve.

What's your name, occupation, and place of residence?
Eve, student, Berkeley.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
I have a road bike (white, specialized carbon fiber) that I got for triathlon. I love it because it makes riding up crazy hills easy -- it takes me to places I can't to go by walking. I can ride up in the hills for three hours where it’s just me, my bike, and awesome nature.

When did you start riding?
I started riding for transport around school, but got this bike for triathlon last March and I love it.

Why do you ride?
I ride for the feeling of being free, powerful, and strong. I love riding with other people and sharing the joy.

Expect to see a new post for the series tomorrow.
