Fall Playlist by Drew Kiser

Photo provided by Drew

I'm excited to share a new playlist by Drew Kiser, a brilliant grad student, skilled cook and baker, and our latest musical curator. In this mix, listen for the likes of Mitski, Beach House, and even some Azealia Banks.

I'll let Drew describe what he's made: "This is the playlist to shake your ass to as you simmer your butternut squash. Mixing hot releases from my two favorite genres, 'sad girl' and 'slutty sad girl,' this playlist will warm your heart as we head into the cold winter months."

You can find Drew's playlist on Spotify or embedded below.

Winter Playlist by Stephanie Barsana

Oakland, August 2020

I'm excited to share a new playlist for winter by Stephanie Barsana, my long-term music whisperer who curated our Spring Playlist last March.

While spring is a time of growth, winter is the opposite. In my little corner of Oakland, the trees have long lost their leaves, the weather is consistently in the 40's and 50's, and the only life I see are the lemon trees that appear on almost every block. There are so many lemons that I'll often find grocery bags brimming with them along the sidewalk. Although I took this photo in August, it seems to fit with the winter we're experiencing right now—just pretend the sky is hazier.

Without further ado, click on for the playlist Stephanie has dubbed "inside voices," featuring the likes of Portishead, Perfume Genius, and more. You can find Stephanie's playlist here or embedded below.

According to Clinton, "This is a playlist for the girls, the gays and the theys. It’s a little something that reminds me of calling up your friends and telling them to come over cuz we going clubbing tonight!"

Listen for songs by Jessie Ware, Kylie Minogue, and Lady Gaga. You can find Clinton's playlist on Apple Music, Spotify, or embedded below.

October Playlist by Morgan Samson

The playlist for October was created by Morgan Samson, the founder of the BoxSpeaker Music blog and veteran mix maker on this one. Here are her answers to a few of my questions.

Who are you?
I'm the founder of BoxSpeaker Music - a music blog that showcases latest tracks from up-and-coming artists, updates on already-established indie favorites, and throwbacks to old school nostalgia. And I soundtrack the occasional indie film.

What's in your playlist?
My playlist is a set of tracks that make me think of romance during Fall. Basically sappy shit about hot cocoa and stomping on leaves and making out. (Or PSLs in place of hot cocoa if you're basic AF.) It spans a wide variety of bands across the globe with newer artists such as NRVS LVRS (San Francisco) and crwn (Manila); older indie classics like Dntel, The One AM Radio, and Sea Wolf; everything in between; and, of course, Carly Rae Jepsen.

What are you looking forward to in October?
I'm looking forward to Treasure Island Music Festival, going to NYC again after 6 years of not being back there, and Halloween-themed Pusheen gifs.

You can find Morgan's playlist here and embedded below.

September Playlist by Summer Si

As mentioned on Facebook and Twitter, I've decided to bring back the monthly guest playlists I had on here a couple years ago. My first volunteer was none other than Summer Si, a blog veteran and all around awesome lady. Here are her answers to a few of my questions.

Who are you?
My name is Summer Si, lazy social media user, incorporating personal style into a health-tech world.

What's in your playlist?
My September playlist for Work It, Berk has my favorite songs from my favorite albums released this year. The first three songs are three different Asian American girl led bands who I got to see at the Starline Social Club in July. It's followed by some alternative garage rock bands, some smooth tunes, folk, and my favorite Rihanna song off of ANTI.

What are you looking forward to in September?
I'm looking forward to NYFW runway shows (especially Rodarte each year), getting a haircut, and taking the GRE at the end of September (applying for my masters this December!).

You can find Summer's playlist here and embedded below.

March Playlist by Reynaldo Rodriguez

The man of the hour

I'd like to present the March Playlist by the one and only, Reynaldo Rodriguez. In his own words, the mix is "...dedicated to all the people who are getting ready to go out but have nowhere to go (like me everyday)." The playlist features the likes of Flosstradamus, Major Lazer, and many other artists I'm not familiar with. Here's to a good time, albeit in your living room.

This photo was used with Rey's permission and my wholehearted approval.

February Playlist by Kate Amunrud

Say hello to Kate and her rockin' blue tips

I'm excited to bring Kate back as our mix master for February and share her 13-track playlist with you all. It features the likes of Janelle Monáe, Gossip, and Yuna. Here's how she described the playlist in her own words: "It's ultra fem-power with a healthy mix of Vintage influence, Dance, Hip Hop, and a dash of Punk influence as well." Sounds good to me!

This photo was used with Kate's permission and it feels so good.

January Playlist by Heather Do

Longtime blog supporter, subject, and sometime playlist maker

Heather Do is many things. She's a great friend, a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen, a brilliant cookbook author, and now our musical curator for January. It is especially apt to have Heather as our mix master because she's supported the blog since its inception and has appeared in it at least a couple times herself.

She has created a mix that will carry you happily into the new year. It includes the likes of Haim, Angel Haze, PJ Harvey, and more. Without further ado, here's the January Playlist.

This photo was used with Heather's seal of approval, which can be a tricky thing to get. Yay, approval!

December Playlist by Kim Rohrer

Kim Rohrer, one talented lady

I'm proud to announce that the monthly playlist is back. This month, we've got a musical powerhouse at the helm, Kim Rohrer.

I met Kim while working at Disqus this past summer. Besides running People Ops over there, Kim's got several pet projects of her own: a witty blog, Kim's Kitchen Sink, a new project for the potluck-inclined, Potluckiest, and Organization Organizers for fellow HR folks. Kim's also a talented singer, sometime ukulele player, and theater lady.

Without further ado, here's our December Playlist packed with tons of holiday tunes.

This photo was used with Kim's permission and seal of approval.

September Playlist by Allie McNay

The musical lady in action, Ms. Allie McNay

I've known Allie for years and it would be an understatement to say that music runs in her blood. She's an extremely talented vocalist and musical therapist (...and apparently she can play the drums, too. Talk about a Jill of all trades). When I asked my Twitter followers about creating a playlist, I was excited to see that Allie volunteered.

Without further ado, I'd like to share our September Playlist with you, featuring the likes of Vampire Weekend, Lorde, and The Civil Wars.

This photo was used with Allie's permission and seal of approval.

August Playlist by Simone Anne

Say hello to Ms. Simone!

This month we've got a photographer at the helm. But not just any photographer. Ladies and gents, this is Simone Anne and she's brilliant. She's a wedding photographer and a great writer. She describes herself as a storyteller and that's exactly what she does. Her photos elicit an emotional response in the viewer, which is a talent in itself. I've known her since the days of Bare Magazine and have followed her journey on her photo blog and now her new travel blog

Without further ado, I'd like to share Simone's playlist with you, which features the likes of Johnny Cash, Macklemore, and Bruce Springsteen.

This photo was used with Simone's permission and seal of approval. It's pretty sick, huh?

July Playlist by Michael Reckstin

It was during my days in the co-ops that I learned of Michael's knack for music and his penchant for plaid. Being the stand up guy that he is, he graciously agreed to create this month's playlist, which features the likes of Major Lazer, Kanye, and AlunaGeorge.

This photo was used with Michael's permission and seal of approval.

June Playlist by Bethann Wagner

The style blogger to look out for, Bethann Wagner

I'm about 99.8% sure that Bethann Wagner was meant to be a style blogger.

Indication #1: The title of her blog is Beth Animal Print. As everyone who has ever picked up a fashion rag or browsed a style blog knows, being punny is essential. I'm not sure if it's because fashion can be so ~serious or because this is where bad puns come to die. (Or are they good puns? One can never be sure.)

Indication #2: Her style is flawless and her baby is even cuter. How many style bloggers do you know who have kids and haven't crossed over into mommy blogger territory? Exactly.

Indication #3: She's got girl power and some of the coolest lady friends around. In her Wonder Women Wednesday series (10 points for alliteration), she interviews inspiring women that she knows in fashion, beauty, and then some. She delves into issues beyond their favorite labels into topics like maintaining work-life balance, interior design, and life with kids.

Indication #4: Her wardrobe is dynamic, yet accessible. I don't know how many bloggers show off their Chanel such-and-such expecting us lowly readers to drool uncontrollably. As a lady of pragmatism and limited funds, I can appreciate looking good for less. (Side note: Thrift stores beat fast fashion any day.)

With very little warning on my part, Bethann graciously agreed to create a 13-track playlist for you lovely readers. Let the likes of Florence + The Machine, Ms. Britney Spears, and Phoenix dissipate any lingering Monday blues.

This photo was used with Bethann's permission and seal of approval.

May Playlist by Sherrie Hang

The lady with the pixie, Ms. Sherrie Hang

I've been smitten with Sherrie Hang's style since I first photographed her in 2010. This was back when she was still an undergrad balancing her time between studying and designing killer looks for FAST. Now, you'd see her stomping around New York (New Yorkers always stomp... right?), wearing studded collars and tweeting about so-and-so's baby's new haircut. She graciously lent me some of her creative juices to create this 22-track playlist with artists that range from New York's own Azealia Banks to everyone's favorite ex-ramen-head, Justin Timberlake. So, pull up your favorite gossip rag, maybe get some ramen now that I mentioned it, and let this mix ease you into the new month. Live long and prosper...? \\//

This photo was used with Sherrie's permission and seal of approval. Amen!
