Eat in Berkeley: Mehak Indian Cuisine

Vegetable Somosa

Garlic Naan

Chicken Tikka Masala

In an effort to showcase the places I patronize the most, I'd say it's about time that I reviewed my favorite Indian restaurant in the Bay Area: Mehak Indian Cuisine, which is located on Sacramento and Dwight in West Berkeley. Although I've never eaten at Mehak in person, I've been ordering delivery from them for the past seven or eight years.

I've tried a variety of their menu items, but usually stick with the hits: Vegetable Somosa, Chicken Tikka Masala, either Garlic or Kashmiri naan, and Mango Lassi. The Vegetable Somosa is perfectly fried, filled with potatoes and peas, and served with two chutneys made with what I believe are tamarind and mint. Their garlic naan is a garlic lover's dream, while the Kashmiri naan—filled with cherry, raisins, coconut, and nuts–is truly luxurious.

Served with a side of rice, the Chicken Tikka Masala is creamy and has a hint of spiciness. I love adding chickpeas to really accentuate the dish. Although I'm not much a lamb person, the curry from their Coconut Lamb is very good. The Mango Lassi is a creamy mango yogurt drink that makes your day a bit brighter. I like adding their Raita—made with homemade yogurt, cucumber, tomato, potato, carrot, mint, and spices—to their curries to create further dimension. The Kheer rice pudding, which is served cold and sprinkled with almonds and pistachios, is a lovely way to end a meal.

If you've tried Mehak Indian Cuisine, what do you recommend trying?
