Eat in Los Angeles: Veggie Grill

Masala Chickpea Curry Bowl: roasted butternut squash, turmeric cauliflower, braised cabbage, masala-spiced chickpea curry, brown rice, and cilantro

Kimchi Beef Bowl: kimchi couscous, roasted ginger yams, roasted baby tomatoes, roasted garlic broccoli, and marinated bulgogi "beef"

I visited Veggie Grill, a plant-based restaurant chain with a location at The Original Farmers Market on Fairfax and 3rd, for the first time in mid-April.

Following my mom's recommendation, I tried the Masala Chickpea Curry Bowl, while she ordered the Kimchi Beef Bowl. Both were really good. The Masala Chickpea Curry Bowl came with roasted butternut squash, turmeric cauliflower, braised cabbage, masala-spiced chickpea curry, brown rice, and cilantro. It was clear that all the ingredients were fresh and they've created an incredible flavor profile, an essential for vegetarian cooking. As a big fan of vegetables and rice, I appreciated their generous portions. The Kimchi Beef Bowl was made with kimchi couscous, roasted ginger yams, baby tomatoes, garlic broccoli, and marinated bulgogi "beef." Although I cannot figure out what the imitation beef was made of, they've mastered its flavor and texture, so I definitely asked for more from my mom's plate.

I'm honestly surprised I haven't visited Veggie Grill before, so I must stop by the next time I'm in the area. If you've visited Veggie Grill recently, what do you recommend trying?

Eat in San Francisco: RT Rotisserie

Rotisserie Rice Bowl with chicken, Nancy's BBQ sauce, rotisserie fat rice, pickled onions, cabbage, cucumber, radish, seeds, and herbs

Rotisserie Chicken Sandwich made with garlic aioli, pickled onion, mixed greens, and ciabatta

Roasted Brussels Sprouts made with garlic aioli, cotija, and lemon

I visited RT Rotisserie, a casual restaurant specializing in rotisserie chicken on the corner of Oak and Franklin in Hayes Valley, for the first time in late March. Since this is a spin-off of Rich Table—a Michelin-starred restaurant just a block away on Gough and Oak—I knew I was in for a treat.

With my knowledgable dining companion as our guide, we ordered a few dishes: the Roasted Brussels Sprouts, the Rotisserie Rice Bowl, and the Rotisserie Chicken Sandwich. These were, without a doubt, the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had. They were roasted, made with garlic aioli, cotija, and lemon, and just the right amount of decadent.

I've also been thinking about the Rice Bowl for a while. All of the bowls come with rotisserie fat rice, pickled onions, cabbage, cucumber, radish, seeds, and herbs, while I chose rotisserie chicken as my protein and Nancy's BBQ sauce to dress it. The rice was hearty and fatty in a way you knew experts made it, while the chicken was perfectly cooked. The fresh vegetables, sesame seeds, dill, and herbs added crunch and breadth to an already impeccably made dish. My dining companion loved his Rotisserie Chicken Sandwich—made with garlic aioli, pickled onion, mixed greens, and ciabatta—as well.

I will definitely be returning soon, probably ordering the Rice Bowl and Roasted Brussels Sprouts again. If you've been to RT Rotisserie recently, what do you recommend trying?

Eat in Berkeley: The Cultured Pickle Shop

Rice Bowl made with sweet brown rice, bok choy rabe, kumquat kosho, carrots with dulse and green garlic, celeriac, kasu, red onion, umeboshi, leek, koji, daikon, Meyer lemon kosho, jalapeño & caroselli kasuzuke, leek greens with date & chile paste brine, and beet & preserved lemon gomashio

Right: Carrot Amazake Pudding with hoshigaki

Beet, Celeriac, & Meyer Lemon dashi

After hearing about it from foodie friends for months, I finally visited The Cultured Pickle Shop, a casual restaurant specializing in fermented food on Bancroft and Fifth in West Berkeley. Apparently a not-so-hidden gem, it's located in the industrial part of Berkeley—close to Vik's Chaat and the shopping area on Fourth Street.

When I stopped by on a lovely Saturday just before noon in late March, I sat at a bistro set out front. They also have a tall table with high stools inside, where you can eat as you watch one of the owners at work. The interior that blends production, kitchen, and dining areas reminds me of the set-up we had in our multipurpose art classrooms in high school or the industrial-sized kitchen in my college housing co-op

As a novice, I was greeted by one of their owners, Alex Hozven, who graciously walked me through the menu and what to expect. They serve a three-tiered vegetarian menu that comes with a cup of homemade dashi, a rice & pickle bowl, and a dessert. My dashi was made with beet, celeriac, and Meyer lemon and it was quite good. It was the perfect introduction to a meal of dynamic, fermented food to come.

My rice bowl came with so many things—many of which I'd never tried or heard of—including sweet brown rice, bok choy rabe, kumquat kosho, carrots with dulse and green garlic, celeriac, kasu, red onion, umeboshi, leek, koji, daikon, Meyer lemon kosho, jalapeño & caroselli kasuzuke, leek greens with date & chile paste brine, and beet & preserved lemon gomashio. I knew from the first bite of the umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum) that the rave reviews I'd been hearing were spot-on. There was so much flavor and dimension in one bite that it required me to really focus on the beautifully made food before me. The rest of the bowl was equally as delightful, innovative, and awe-inspiring. I particularly liked the leek leaf, which had a nice crunch like a chip, and I didn't even know was edible before my visit. All of the tangy, fermented flavors layered together nicely over the rice and it's clear that they're experts in the craft.

The meal ended on a sweet note with the Carrot Amazake Pudding with hoshigaki. I never thought of carrot pudding as a concept and I never knew it could be so creamy and good. Needless to say, I ate every bite of my meal.

Considering the incredible meal and hospitality, I will definitely stop by again soon. Next time, I may add a cured egg or avocado to my rice & pickle bowl or even take home a jar of pickled veggies. If you've visited The Cultured Pickle Shop, what do you recommend trying?

Eat in Oakland: Daytrip

Miso Butter Pasta made with Shared Cultures honeynut miso, kelp pearls, and gochugaru

Hot Focaccia made from overnight sourdough and served with house vinegars

My dining companion and I finally visited Daytrip, a hip natural wine bar on Telegraph between 43rd and 44th in Temescal, in late March. Although it apparently opened in just October, I had been wanting to try it for what felt like years.

We ordered a few things: the Hot Focaccia to start, followed by the Miso Butter Pasta as our main course, and a glass of their natural wines each. The focaccia was incredible—it was warm, slightly buttery, and came with a side of photogenic house vinegars. The Miso Butter Pasta was a decadent dream made with Shared Cultures honeynut miso, kelp pearls, and gochugaru. I ordered a glass of the Quarticello Spuma Mia Rosato, a rosé that veered on the sweet side and tasted like honey. It was so good that I've been searching for it ever since.

Next time, I might see what wines they have for sale in their bottle shop. If you've been to Daytrip, what would you recommend trying?

Eat in Sacramento: Pizzasaurus Rex

Pepperoni pizza made with red sauce, three cheese blend, parmesan, pepperoni, and fresh basil

Dino slice

Caesar Salad

On our last day in town, we stopped by Pizzasaurus Rex, a cute pizza place on K and 24th in Midtown Sacramento, for a slice of pizza and salad for lunch.

We ordered a slice of Pepperoni pizza, a dino slice (the special of the day), and the Caesar Salad. The pepperoni was made with red sauce, their three cheese blend, parmesan, pepperoni, and fresh basil, while I cannot recall the dino slice's flavor that day.

Next time I would want to try the Potato pizza, which is made with white sauce, potato slices, onions, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, herbs, and parsley. If you've tried Pizzasaurus Rex, what do you recommend?

Coffee in Sacramento: Temple Coffee Roasters

Cheese danish

Cappuccino (left) and Drip coffee (right)

After leaving our Airbnb, we killed some time at Temple Coffee Roasters, a sleek third-wave coffee chain on K and 22nd in Midtown Sacramento. We ordered a cheese danish to tide us over and a cappuccino and drip coffee to wake us up. Both were quite good—it's clear they know what they're doing here.

I would definitely stop by again if I were looking for a relaxing spot to wind down or meet with friends for a warm drink. If you've been to Temple Coffee Roaster, what did you try?
