Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe (Pt. 6)

Breakfast Sandwich with mushroom, organic egg, Havarti, and Gruyere on levain

Poached Egg Sandwich with tomato jam, Niman Ranch bacon, poached organic egg, herbed mayonnaise, and arugula on sliced sourdough

Guys, I did it. I made a tag exclusively for Elmwood Cafe. Now you can see all six (and counting) posts about one of my favorite Berkeley cafes on one page. Boom, technology. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Like many weekends, we stopped by Elmwood Cafe for brunch. I ordered the Poached Egg Sandwich with house-made tomato jam, Niman Ranch bacon, poached organic egg, herbed mayonnaise, and arugula on sliced sourdough. It was as good (and messy) as expected. Since the last time I had this sandwich, they've replaced the sliced heirloom tomatoes with tomato jam. The tomato jam gave the sandwich a richness that I liked. My dining companion ordered the Breakfast Sandwich with mushroom, organic egg, Havarti, and Gruyere on levain, which he seemed to enjoy. The eggs were hard-boiled to perfection and the cheeses provided a lot of flavor. We ordered a latte each, which were as good as usual.

Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe (Pt. 5)

Flourless Bourbon Chocolate Cake

Last weekend we stopped by Elmwood Cafe for a latte and an afternoon treat. We usually visit the cafe for brunch (see: 123) or even lunch, so this was a nice change of pace.

In addition to our coffee, we ordered the Flourless Bourbon Chocolate Cake and two slices of Acme levain toast with Blood Orange Cranberry Marmalade and butter. The chocolate cake was dense and chocolaty like fudge. It went well with our lattes. The crust was crumbly goodness. We didn't really taste the bourbon flavor though. The toast was also good, although the marmalade was a bit too sour for my liking. I guess I'm not a marmalade person.

Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe (Pt. 4)

Poached Egg Sandwich with Early Girl tomato, Niman Ranch bacon, poached egg, herbed mayonnaise, and arugula on Acme roll

Poached Organic Eggs, served with Acme levain toast

Frittata with kale, cauliflower, peas, zucchini, onion, and cheddar

Yesterday, I visited Elmwood Cafe for brunch with a few friends. (I've covered this neighborhood favorite three times previously.)

I ordered the Poached Egg Sandwich, which was as good as the first time I had it. Instead of sliced bread, they now use a fresh Acme roll. Like last time, the yolk of the perfectly poached egg bursts at first bite. My friend ordered the Poached Organic Eggs and the daily Frittata. The Frittata was made with kale, cauliflower, peas, zucchini, onion, and cheddar. It was very flavorful. The poached eggs seemed to be a hit as well.

Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe (Pt. 3)

Smoked Salmon Sandwich with cream cheese, cucumbers, pickled red onions, and lemon pepper on Acme Levain

Cinnamon Currant Toast with whipped cream cheese and blackberry apple jam

This past weekend I visited a favorite cafe of mine, Elmwood Cafe on College. Previously I had the Poached Egg Sandwich and Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich, both of which were really good.

This time around I tried the Smoked Salmon Sandwich with the Cinnamon Currant Toast on the side. The open-faced sandwich was layered with cream cheese, smoked salmon, cucumbers, pickled red onions, and then sprinkled with pepper. The salty and sour flavors complemented each other nicely.

The Cinnamon Currant Toast was a nice way to end the meal on a sweet note. The bread was soft and swirled with cinnamon. The cream cheese and blackberry apple jam joined together to make the toast even more special, but not too decadent. In short, I would definitely order these again.

Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe (Pt. 2)

Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich made with Mary's free range chicken, currants, almonds, scallions, house-made mayonnaise, organic greens, and an Acme baguette

You know a restaurant is a hit when it's covered more than once. Elmwood Cafe is like that for me. After trying their delicious Poached Egg Sandwich back in October, I've been craving more from this quaint neighborhood cafe ever since.

This time I tried the Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich made with Mary's free range chicken, currants, almonds, scallions, house-made mayonnaise, organic greens, and an Acme baguette. In short, it is everything you want in a lunch and then some. The curried chicken is prepared and seasoned perfectly. The fresh bread has the right amount of crunch and all the ingredients in the chicken salad add another layer of dimension.

I've had this sandwich two of the three times I've visited. Next time, I might try the Quiche or the Smoked Salmon Sandwich. Or, maybe the Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich again.

Eat in Berkeley: Elmwood Cafe

Poached Egg Sandwich with organic heirloom tomatoes, Niman Ranch bacon, an organic poached egg, herbed mayo, and arugula on sliced Acme sourdough bread

I've known about Elmwood Cafe since they transitioned from being Ozzie's Soda Fountain in 2010. However, it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I finally visited this quaint College Avenue cafe with my pal Kim of Kim's Kitchen Sink.

I ordered a cappuccino and the Poached Egg Sandwich, which came with tomatoes, bacon, a poached egg, and arugula on sliced Acme sourdough. Both were pretty good. Like their lattes, the cappuccino was served in a large cup and was prepared perfectly. The egg sandwich was also very good. The herbed mayo united all of the flavors well and the ingredients were fresh. It was a good choice for a noon brunch.

I also enjoyed Elmwood Cafe's outdoor seating, one of the main highlights of eating there at brunch. It feels like a cafe you'd find on a cobbled European street.

I will definitely be returning soon. Pretty much everything on their brunch menu and their baked goods looked appealing. Kim confirmed these suspicions wholeheartedly.
