Eat in Burbank: Porto's Bakery & Café (Pt. 2)

Raspberry Passion Fruit Macaron

Fruit Tart

When visiting Los Angeles a few weeks ago, I made sure to stop by Porto's Bakery & Café in Burbank.

I picked up two treats I've never tried before: a Raspberry Passion Fruit Macaron and a Fruit Tart. Both were quite good. The macaron was made with fresh raspberries and a tangy passion fruit filling. The macaron shell had the slight crunch I like. The fruit tart was made with fresh strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, and apple. The custard had a nice flavor that complemented the crust well.

In addition to these desserts, we also stayed for lunch. I had the Cubano sandwich made with slow-roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and Cuban dressing on Cuban bread with plantain chips on the side. It's one of my favorites.

Eat in Berkeley: Imm Thai Street Food

Pad Woon Sen made with glass noodles, egg, cabbage, carrots, green onion, and garlic

I finally visited Imm Thai Street Food on University and Shattuck in Downtown Berkeley last week. As noted by the folks at Berkeleyside, this sleek Thai restaurant serves a variety of classic Thai dishes alongside street food style options.

Slightly overwhelmed by their incredibly appetizing menu, I ordered the Pad Woon Sen made with glass noodles, egg, cabbage, carrots, green onion, and garlic. It was very good. The noodles and vegetables were packed with flavor in ways I've never experienced. Even the often dull cabbage was a joy to eat. I would definitely order this again. I also had a bit of the roti, which were crispy and buttery as desired.

Eat in West Hollywood: George's Greek Grill

Chicken Kabob Plate made with grilled chicken breast marinated in lemon, extra virgin olive oil, and spices, served with tzatziki, basmati rice, and a Greek salad

Gyro Sandwich made with a combination of shaved beef and lamb, served with tzatziki

George's Greek Grill serves delicious Greek food on Santa Monica Boulevard, a block and a half east of San Vicente, in West Hollywood.

When we stopped by last weekend, I had a delicious Gyro Sandwich made with shaved beef and lamb, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, and tzatziki sauce. The beef and lamb was very tasty. The cut vegetables were surrounded by a soft pita I really liked. I would definitely order the gyro again.

My mom enjoyed the Chicken Kabob plate made with grilled chicken breast marinated in lemon, extra virgin olive oil, and spices as well.

Eat in West Hollywood: Urth Caffé (Pt. 3)

Sunrise Pizza made with sausage, pancetta, mozzarella, potatoes, poached egg, and brown sage butter

Mocha Mint

While in Los Angeles the past week, I visited Urth Caffé for lunch and after-dinner coffee on three separate occasions.

One of my after-dinner drinks included the Mocha Mint topped with whipped cream. This was quite a treat. It had a nice chocolaty mint flavor throughout. Warning: This is clearly a drink for those with a sweet tooth.

For lunch, I tried the Sunrise Pizza made with sausage, pancetta, mozzarella, potatoes, poached egg, and brown sage butter. It was a pretty solid pizza. The best part was definitely the toppings: slightly spicy sausage with sliced potatoes and a poached egg to boot? Mmmm... I would have liked the crust to be a bit crispier however.

Eat in Los Angeles: My Two Cents

Creole Shrimp + Grits with a baked egg

M2C Chicken "in" Waffle with cheese grits and a baked egg

M2C Chicken "in" Waffle with sweet potato hash and a baked egg

Homemade Biscuits

I think I've found my favorite new brunch spot in Los Angeles: My Two Cents. Located on Pico between Fairfax and La Brea, My Two Cents is a Southern-style restaurant with a fresh twist.

When I visited last weekend, I ordered the Creole Shrimp + Grits with a baked egg and homemade biscuit on the side. These were easily the best shrimp and grits I've had--although I haven't had many--and this was mostly due to the incredible flavor. Slice open the perfectly baked egg, watch the yolk pool, mop up some egg and grits with a piece of biscuit, and you're set. What I also like about this dish is that it seems a lot lighter than dishes offered at other Southern restaurants. They've managed to make Southern food attractive to the health-conscious LA palate.

My friends both had the M2C Chicken "in" Waffle with sides of sweet potato hash, cheese grits, and a baked egg. The M2C Chicken dish is special because it includes pieces of the barbecue chicken in the waffle batter. I'll have to try this dish the next time I stop by to confirm my friends' praise.
