While looking for ice cream bars last weekend, my dining companion and I instead pivoted, picking up a few treats from Colonial Donuts on Lakeshore near Trestle Glen by Lake Merritt. I remember enjoying their cake donuts when I stopped by their Montclair location years ago.
Beyond mastering the classic cake donuts and apple fritters, they're also making trendier items like mochi donuts that are worth talking about. They had a good selection of mochi donut flavors available. We tried the Cookies 'n' Cream one, whose texture I liked, while the frosting was a bit sweet. I would definitely try this again, perhaps in Cinnamon Sugar. We also enjoyed our other picks: the Apple Fritter, Chocolate Coconut cake donut, and Raised Crumb donut, all well-made and growing in strength when dipped in coffee. Mm mmm.
