Eat in San Francisco: El Nuevo Frutilandia

Mofongo: garlic-flavored, mashed green plantains with pork filling and a vegetable sauce on top

At the beginning of December, an old friend and I shared an amazing meal at El Nuevo Frutilandia, a Cuban and Puerto Rican restaurant on 24th between Lucky and Folsom in the Mission. Since we had never been, we followed the guidance from their lovely staff to help us pick our courses.

We began with the Frutilandia App Combo that came with tostones, maduros, yucca, taro chips, mojo de ajo, and spicy aioli. Everything was delicious. I loved the sweetness of the maduros, the crispiness of the taro chips, and the starchy texture of the tostones. We then tried the Mofongo, which was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives—garlic-flavored, mashed green plantains with pork filling, topped with a vegetable sauce. It was also quite good. I appreciate the versatility they exhibited with multiple types of plantains and the clear care and expertise they put in preparing their beautifully-presented food. We rounded out the meal with Tres Leches Cake, the "traditional sponge cake soaked in... evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream."

Between the incredible food and friendly service, I would definitely visit El Nuevo Frutilandia in the future. If you've visited, what would you recommend?
