Eat in Berkeley: Lindgren's Coffee & Café

Three-egg omelette with spinach, served with bacon and toast

Corned beef panini on rye with Swiss, served with lettuce, tomato, mustard, and melon

I can already tell that Lindgren's will soon become a Berkeley staple. Located on Dwight Way just off of Shattuck Avenue, this delightful café attracts both serial café dwellers and those who use "brunch" as a verb. While I'm no longer a student and not particularly fond of coffee, I easily fall into the latter category.

When you first enter Lindgren's, you'll notice their traditional coffee shop set-up: a menu of caffeinated drinks, plenty of power outlets, and tables where laptops and refreshments manage to coexist. As you move in further, you'll see a door that leads to a wonderful patio space where my type call home. It is here where half a dozen or so tables stand under umbrellas when it's light out and a string of lights when it's not.

On my most recent visit, I ordered the corned beef panini on rye with Swiss cheese. I must admit that I'm not a master of picking meat, bread, and cheese combinations; Lindgren's owner graciously guided me towards this seemingly obvious favorite. Regardless, this sandwich is worth talking about. The corned beef was thick, juicy, and made that morning. The rye was crisp and the Swiss mingled very well with the accompanying lettuce, tomato, and mustard. The sandwich came with some type of melon I've never had; what I can say is that it was yellow, ripe, and damn good.

What I like even more than the food is the outdoor space. The shop has a very homey vibe, like if you were really sharing brunch in your friend's backyard. Since most apartments around here probably don't have the luxury of shared outside space, Lindgren's is definitely a brilliant alternative.

Eat in San Francisco: Mau

Spring rolls with poached pork and shrimp, vermicelli, mint, and peanut dipping sauce

Eel and Banana Blossom salad

Hủ Tiếu with xa-xiu pork, chicken, shrimp, ground pork, and garlic chicken broth

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of trying Mau for the second time. Located on Valencia near 18th Street in the heart of the Mission, Mau serves solid Vietnamese food in an even cooler atmosphere. Patrons have the option of enjoying their meals at standard-height tables, high tables, or counters. We opted to sit at the counter along the storefront window, both because of the excellent view of the street and the hooks underneath that kept our backpacks from getting dirty.

On my most recent visit, I tried a few different dishes: the spring rolls, the Eel and Banana Blossom salad, and the Hủ Tiếu noodle soup. The spring rolls were everything you want in the Vietnamese staple. Every ingredient was fresh and the flavors were harmoniously united by the peanut sauce. I'd definitely recommend trying the Eel and Banana Blossom salad as well. Although I only tried a couple of bites, it had a dynamic taste while still feeling pretty light. (Read: You'll crave more.)

For the main event, I had the Hủ Tiếu. While I've tried a few types of phở in the past and have a special place in my heart for Bún Bò Huế, whether traditional or vegetarian, I've never had Hủ Tiếu before. Like the other dishes, it was quite a delight. It had a seafood essence that complemented the flavors of the various types of meat and the garlicky broth rather nicely. With a friend knowledgeable of Vietnamese cuisine at my table, I can confirm that Mau's version is authentic.

If you're looking for a warm bowl of soup in the Mission, I'd suggest stopping by Mau for a little piece of Vietnamese heaven. As one Yelper exclaimed, "Oh. Mau. Goodness."

The Bicycle Profiles: Tracy and Lady

Want to see more of Tracy and her daughter? Here ya go!

What's your name? What do you do? Where do you live?
My name is Tracy, I teach Bikram yoga and am a registered nurse. I also take care of my baby girl, Lady. We just moved to South Berkeley off of Telegraph.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
My bike(s) are family members and lifelines to the way I want to interact with the world. I've got history and stories and love with both of them.

When did you start riding?
I learned to ride as a kid, but took it up as a means of transport and recreation as an adult in 2005. I was living in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time and had a dreamy boyfriend that liked to ride. So we did. The love for bike-riding and confidence I gained learning to ride on city streets stuck, even though the relationship did not (obviously).

Why do you ride?
I ride because it's a great way to experience your community. You ride around, you see somewhere/one you want to check out, you follow your nose, you stop. I also like not having to wait on or run for the bus! And I ride so Lady and I can hang out together and have a good time.

Eat in Berkeley: Manpuku

The California roll with added tobiko and the Spider roll

Manpuku, or what I like to childishly refer to as "Manpoopoo," is a staple for Berkeley sushi fiends. Nestled in between College Avenue's own restaurant row, Manpuku is known for having a pretty good selection of sushi, noodles, and other Japanese fixins at even better prices. I've eaten here several times and would highly recommend the spicy hotate (scallop) nigiri, the unagi (BBQ eel) nigiri, and any of the udon soups. As a sushi novice, I'd suggest bringing a sushi-head who can highlight which pieces to try.

While the restaurant looks very narrow from the front entrance, there's actually a lot of seating space and I've always been able to get a table or a spot at the counter. I'd recommend ordering your favorite rolls and sipping on a cup of hot tea, while watching the sushi master work his magic.

The Bicycle Profiles: Heather

If you've been following the blog for a while, you know I've got a thing for biking. I even started a bike series way back in October of 2011 and resurrected it in May of last year. Well, I'm happy to announce that the fourth installment of the series is finally here and it's featuring none other than a blog veteran and loyal follower.

What's your name? What do you do? Where do you live?
Heather. I twerk as an editorial intern at Chronicle Books in the Food and Lifestyle Departments. For the moment, I'm living in the Inner Richmond where the GGP is five minutes to the south and the Presidio is five minutes to the north, the Asian food is good, and young families are raised. Clement Street rules.

Describe your relationship with your bike.
My bike is my #1.

When did you start riding?
I got this used bike circa January 2009 -- right around the time I realized getting to Ici Ice Cream is faster by bike than by bus, feet, or unicycle.

Why do you ride?
Biking compresses the geographical landscape into manageable chunks to travel and get from place to place. It's also affordable, sustainable, and often times efficient and convenient. Ultimately, I bike for adventure and autonomy, travel and pleasure.

Want to be a part of the series? Let's make it happen.

July Playlist by Michael Reckstin

It was during my days in the co-ops that I learned of Michael's knack for music and his penchant for plaid. Being the stand up guy that he is, he graciously agreed to create this month's playlist, which features the likes of Major Lazer, Kanye, and AlunaGeorge.

This photo was used with Michael's permission and seal of approval.
