Eat in Berkeley: sweetgreen

Hello Portobello salad made with organic wild rice, shredded kale, raw beets, bean sprouts, basil, spicy sunflower seeds, roasted portobello mushroom mix, and miso sesame ginger vinaigrette

This past weekend I tried sweetgreen, a new salad shop that opened in the building previously occupied by Oscar's, on Shattuck and Hearst in Berkeley. Sweetgreen serves a wide selection of salads in multiple locations across several states.

I ordered the Hello Portobello salad made with organic wild rice, shredded kale, raw beets, bean sprouts, basil, spicy sunflower seeds, roasted portobello mushroom mix, and miso sesame ginger vinaigrette. It was pretty good. All of the ingredients were fresh and dressed perfectly.

They gave the old Oscar's a facelift by adding a neon sign listing each of the seasons and al fresco seating. Since they just opened on April 19th, there might be a bit of a line out the door. It goes by pretty quickly and you'll soon be greeted by their friendly staff.

Eat in San Francisco: Iza Ramen

Regular Iza Tsukemen: ramen noodle with a separate dipping soup, ume shiso plum chicken, slow-cooked BBQ pork, marinated egg, green onion, bean sprouts, bamboo shoot, and fresh seaweed

This past weekend my friend and I planned to visit Mensho Ramen on Geary in Lower Nob Hill. After meeting the terribly long line they're known for, we opted to try Iza Ramen in the Lower Haight instead. We made the right decision: Iza had a more manageable line and its surrounding neighborhood was quite lovely during the golden hour. Iza started as a weekend-only pop-up in the Mission and opened this permanent location last October.

I ordered the Regular Iza Tsukemen ramen with a separate dipping soup, ume shiso plum chicken, slow-cooked BBQ pork, marinated egg, green onion, bean sprouts, bamboo shoot, and fresh seaweed. I've only ever had tsukemen ramen at Tsujita LA Artisan Noodle in Los Angeles. It was quite good. The broth was thick like I remembered and filled with everything I like in a bowl of ramen. My friend really enjoyed the Regular Iza Ramen with their special broth (a mix of tonkotsu, chicken, bonito tuna, and vegetable broth), slow-cooked BBQ pork, a marinated egg, spicy green onion, bean sprouts, nori, and fresh seaweed.

Eat in West Hollywood: Urth Caffé (Pt. 2)

Blackout Pound Cake

A couple weeks ago my mom and I visited our favorite coffee shop in town: Urth Caffé.

We finally accomplished our goal of trying one of the delicious cakes they always have on display. We ordered the Blackout Pound Cake with our usual Italian Cappuccinos. The cake was as chocolaty as expected and went well with the perfectly prepared coffee.

Eat in Los Angeles: The Gumbo Pot

Jambalaya with chicken and andouille sausage, served with cornbread and sweet potato salad with apples and raisins

Seafood Gumbo with shrimp, crab, file, and okra, served with cornbread and vegetarian collard greens

The Gumbo Pot serves delicious New Orleans cuisine at The Original Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax.

When we stopped by last week, I tried the Jambalaya with chicken and andouille sausage, cornbread, and sweet potato salad with apples and raisins. The jambalaya had generous portions of chicken and sausage, and a bold and smoky flavor as promised. The cornbread complemented the jambalaya well. The sweet potato salad was also quite good. It provided a nice, cool balance to the spicy rice dish. My mom ordered the Seafood Gumbo with shrimp, crab, file, and okra, which she seemed to enjoy as well.

Eat in Los Angeles: Sky’s Gourmet Tacos

Street-Sized Potato Taco

Black Bean and Cheese Quesadilla

Last week I visited Sky’s Gourmet Tacos on Pico for the first time.

I tried the street-sized Potato Taco and the Black Bean and Cheese Quesadilla, the latter of which was strongly recommended by my friends. Both were quite good. The taco included all the fixin's found in their other tacos plus perfectly cooked potato slices. The quesadilla had a great flavor and was oozing with melted cheese.

Eat in San Francisco: Ozumo San Francisco

Yaki Tako: olive oil poached baby octopus, confit fingerling potatoes, watermelon radish, satsuma supremes, grilled endive, and red yuzu kosho chimichurri

Special tasting from the chef: Hanabi made with hamachi, avocado, and a ginger jalapeño ponzu

Cherry Blossom (left): brandy, lemon juice, creme de violet, and egg white
Invitation Only (right): Nikka “Taketsuru” Japanese whisky, Cynar, Lillet Rouge, black walnut bitters, and tobacco foam

Hamachi (yellowtail), Maguro (Bigeye tuna), Buritoro (yellowtail belly), and Sake (Scottish salmon) nigiri

Haru-Maki (left): fried asparagus, avocado roll, cherry blossom edible flower, halibut, and yuzu kosho
Hotate (right): prosciutto-wrapped seared day boat scallops, kabocha, red endive, poached quince, and bacon hash with truffle compound butter

Bronzini: pan-seared bronzini, yuzu kosho, beurre blanc, cherry blossom, kimchi apples, crispy kale, compressed orange, and pea tendrils

Choco Chan: flourless chocolate cake, green tea ice cream, and shiso syrup

This past Thursday I was treated to an incredible dining experience at Ozumo San Francisco. Located on Steuart between Howard and Mission in the Embarcadero District, this Japanese restaurant boasts an amazing selection of sushi, grilled meats and seafood, and desserts very similar to what they offer at their Oakland location. I was invited to try their Cherry Blossom Festival menu, which included three of the items above.

We began our wonderful meal with a special tasting from the chef of the Hanabi, which is made with hamachi, avocado, and a ginger jalapeño ponzu. This had a nice crunch, starting the meal on a fresh note. We then tried the Yaki Tako made with olive oil poached baby octopus, confit fingerling potatoes, watermelon radish, satsuma supremes, grilled endive, and red yuzu kosho chimichurri. This was a standout dish. The octopus had a great chewy texture without being rubbery as well as a nice smoky flavor. A lot of attention was put into the sides as well, which created a dynamic set of flavors. I would definitely try this dish again.

Our next course included four types of nigiri: Hamachi (yellowtail), Maguro (Bigeye tuna), Buritoro (yellowtail belly), and Sake (Scottish salmon). Every piece was oozing with flavor. The Scottish salmon was particularly buttery. This really cements Ozumo's standing as a must-try place for sushi. We then had the Haru-Maki, another roll prepared for the Cherry Blossom Festival. This roll was made with fried asparagus, avocado roll, cherry blossom edible flower, halibut, and yuzu kosho. My dining companion described it as the most interesting roll he's had in his entire life. I agree completely: the fusion of so many different flavors and textures was very intriguing. There was a spiciness from the yuzu kosho, a crunchiness from the fried asparagus, and a softness from the halibut. It's a must-try roll.

The next dish was equally awe-inspiring: the Hotate made with prosciutto-wrapped seared day boat scallops, kabocha, red endive, poached quince, and bacon hash with truffle compound butter. The prosciutto-wrapped scallops had a richness and decadence that was amplified by the very flavorful hash it was surrounded by. We made sure to finish every morsel of this dish. The Bronzini, the final item from the festival menu, included pan-seared bronzini, yuzu kosho, beurre blanc, cherry blossom, kimchi apples, crispy kale, compressed orange, and pea tendrils. The bronzini, a buttery white fish, was complemented by the tangy kimchi apples, crispy kale, and delicious sauce. We finished a truly incredible meal with an equally delicious dessert. We ordered the Choco Chan, a flourless chocolate cake with green tea ice cream and shiso syrup. The chocolate cake was as chocolaty as expected and tasted great with the green tea ice cream.

We tried a few of their highly recommended drink options with our meal. We had a shot of sake that was made specifically for Ozumo. It was very smooth. We also tried a few of their specially made cocktails. I had the Cherry Blossom, a part of the festival menu, made with brandy, lemon juice, creme de violet, and egg white. It had a great flavor and the egg white gave it a nice foamy texture on top. My dining companion tried the Invitation Only, which was made with Nikka “Taketsuru” Japanese whisky, Cynar, Lillet Rouge, black walnut bitters, and tobacco foam. He described the taste as full-bodied with a rustic finish.

The interior of the restaurant is very similar to the one at their Oakland location. They have the same sleek decor with the added bonus of an excellent view of the bay. As before, we were helped by the very friendly and knowledgeable staff and were graciously introduced to the incredible people in charge of every aspect of the restaurant from the food to the sake, hospitality and more. I'd like to thank Ozumo San Francisco, Mel Collins, the Director of Hospitality, and Olivia of DKC for the wonderful evening.

Coffee in West Hollywood: Longshot Coffee

Latte

I stopped by Longshot Coffee for the first time last week. Located right outside the West Hollywood Library, this coffee shop serves an Australian roast that's stronger than I'm used to. My latte had a bold flavor and was less milky than lattes I've had elsewhere. Maybe it's an Australian thing?

Eat in West Hollywood: Lemonade

Herb Roasted Chicken sandwich with mozzarella, basil pesto, and arugula

While visiting Los Angeles this past weekend, I stopped by Lemonade for lunch. Lemonade is a New American deli that serves sandwiches, salads, desserts, and several types of lemonade. They have multiple locations across four counties in Southern California with plans to expand to the Bay Area. Their West Hollywood location on Beverly has a bright, photogenic interior perfect for a casual lunch with friends or family.

I ordered the Herb Roasted Chicken sandwich, which came with mozzarella, basil pesto, and arugula. It was pretty good. It was served warm so the cheese was nicely melted. The ingredients were fresh and all the flavors complemented each other well.

The next time I stop by I'd like to try the Seared Ahi Tuna with Crushed Orange-Ginger Ponzu and a giant Chocolate Hazelnut macaron for dessert.

Eat in Berkeley: Café Clem (Pt. 2)

Le Provencal bagel with goat cheese, basil, and roasted tomatoes

The last time I covered Café Clem I had Les Oeufs Lucas with steamed-scrambled eggs, crème fraîche, goat cheese, basil, roasted tomatoes, and parsley.

This time I tried Le Provencal bagel with goat cheese, basil, and roasted tomatoes. The goat cheese was a nice change from the usual cream cheese. I also had a latte, which was perfectly prepared as expected.
