Eat in San Francisco: Boba Guys

Jasmine Milk Tea

I kind of have a thing for milk tea. I have an even bigger thing for Boba Guys. I've been a big fan of theirs ever since reading about them on GOOD. When they were handing out full-size samples at my work last year, that sealed the deal. Since then, I've tried their teas on a monthly basis at my current job and the love affair has only grown stronger. I even make it a point to tweet about my drink before, during, and after consuming it because hello social media.

Today, I finally visited their store on 19th and Valencia in the Mission. While I wasn't received with open arms from complete strangers like I daydreamed and I didn't have a half-hour long conversation with the owners about how the Jasmine Milk Tea is life-altering, I left with a damn fine beverage, which is A-OK by me.

I've tried a few flavors of their milk tea, most notably the Classic Milk Tea and the Jasmine Milk Tea with and without boba. Their tea tastes very creamy and high-quality, while the boba is just the right amount of chewy. You can tell they've put their hearts into working out all the kinks to make the best tea they can. And they have. My current favorite is the Jasmine. What I really like about this tea is its very subtle, flowery aftertaste that almost makes the tea seem like a dream.

The only downside to Boba Guys is that when you order it without boba and use a wide straw, it's gone before you know it. Sadface.

Because apparently I like to end my restaurant reviews with hashtags... #BobaAllNight

Eat in Berkeley: Tea Fever

Lavender Boba Milk Tea

I stumbled upon Tea Fever a few months ago. I was intrigued by their boba and waffle combo. It was late morning, so I ordered a lavender boba milk tea and one of their warm waffles. The waffles were freshly-made and the boba was pretty solid, especially for a boba milk tea fiend like myself. I visited again this weekend during Sunday Streets Berkeley and it was the perfect way to cool down in the hot afternoon sun.

Eat in New York City: Miss Du's Tea Shop

Mango Fruit Tea with popping mango boba

I visited Miss Du's Tea Shop, a casual tea store known for boba, fruit teas, slushies, and other refreshing drinks, located on Pell and Mott in Manhattan's Chinatown in late September. I tried the Mango Fruit Tea with popping mango boba. It hit the spot perfectly: it was cold, refreshing, and the popping boba added to the drink's entertainment value.

I would visit Miss Du's Tea Shop if I'm back in the area, perhaps trying a Mango Pomelo Sago.

Eat in Honolulu: Island Vintage Shave Ice

Tropical Island shave ice made with mango, pineapple, soft ice cream, and popping boba

Since eating shave ice is required on any trip to Hawaii, my dining companion and I stopped by Island Vintage Shave Ice, a shave ice shop on Kalakaua and Paokalani in Waikiki, on our trip in late September. I've only ever had this dessert a couple times and I remember being impressed with how a mountain of ice could be decorated in such a way that it was as creamy as ice cream.

We tried the Tropical Island shave ice made with mango, pineapple, soft ice cream, and popping boba. It was quite a treat: I liked the mango flavor as well as the texture of the popping boba and what I believe were the soft, doughy bits of ice cream.

I'm now wondering why we didn't each get our own...

Eat in Berkeley: Purple Kow

Hazelnut Milk (Black) Tea with boba

This was the first time I tried Purple Kow after my friend told me good things about its new location in downtown Berkeley. Being the hazelnut fiend that I am, I ordered the hazelnut milk tea with boba. It was everything I hoped for and more. The tea was silky and higher quality than other boba drinks I've tried. The tapioca pearls were the right proportions of soft and chewy.

Overall, it was a great drink I'd definitely recommend to Berkeley bobaheads.

Eat in Berkeley: Sheng Kee Bakery

Coconut Cream Bun

Shredded Pork Bun

German Pudding

Mocha Cream Horn and Portuguese Custard Tart

Coconut Tart and Thin Sesame Cookies

Red Velvet Cookie

Today I visited Sheng Kee Bakery on Telegraph, mere feet away from the UC Berkeley campus. With locations across the Bay Area, including a few in San Francisco, Sheng Kee serves a variety of sweet and savory baked goods, boba, and Berkeley's own Peet's Coffee. Both times I've been here I've ordered the coconut cream bun. It's 50% decadence and 50% creamy goodness. This bakery has opened rather recently but usually has a long line of eager students that goes through quickly. All of the baked goods are less than $2, filling the holes in your heart and your pocket. Did I mention it's damn good?

Eat in San Francisco: Plentea

Thai Tea and Taro tea with creama

Last week I finally saw Moving In Place, a documentary by Lyka Sethi and Geoffrey Iwata about young Puerto Ricans trying to navigate life on and off the island. After the screening, my friend and I caught up over milk tea at Plentea, a boba spot on Kearny and Pine in the Financial District.

I ordered a Thai tea, while my friend had a taro tea with creama. Plentea is known for using glass bottles that you can return for a discounted drink. My tea was not bad; I wish the tea wasn't already mixed so I could have seen the swirls of orange and white because #aesthetics.

The next time I visit I'll probably try a classic black milk tea or the Sea Salt Creama Coffee. If you've visited Plentea recently, what do you recommend trying?

Eat in Oakland: UC Dessert

UC Milk Tea

UC Dessert is a boba milk tea and dessert cafe located on 9th and Franklin in Oakland Chinatown. I visited for the first time last weekend, ordering a classic UC Milk Tea. At only $2.50, this was quite a steal. The milk tea gave me the creamy caffeinated mid-day spurge I wanted.

Next time I might try the Jasmine Milk Tea or one of the fruit teas made with cut fruit floating in the cup. If you've visited UC Dessert recently, what do you recommend trying?
