19th-Century Throwback

100_1615
BANCROFT & SHATTUCK
Believe it or not, this is not a Halloween costume. This is the uniform he wears to work on the Lady Washington, the ship used in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Either way, it's pretty spiffy.

Piercing Plaid

100_1613
LOWER SPROUL PLAZA
I don't know if it's the all-black blazer, pant, crocodile belt, and boat shoe combination, the checked plaid shirt, the lip-, nose-, and ear-piercings, or the awesome 'do that attracted me to this outfit. What I do know is that I wouldn't mind seeing what other clever ensembles are up his well-tailored sleeve.

The Three Amigas..?

100_1607
BANCROFT & TELEGRAPH
I've realized how much I love taking photographs of more than one person, especially groups of three. It creates a new dynamic in how the subjects interact with each other. This is exceedingly apparent in the range of expressions and poses.

This photograph is a case in point. The girl on the left is in the process of eating a scrumptious hot-diggity-dog, the girl in the middle is starring outside of the frame's range into the long-lost land of Telegraph Avenue, and the girl on the right is in a full-blown pose. I don't know if I've been learning too much statistics in my econ class or not, but you can almost say there is an element of randomness in whatever poses or expressions your subjects will have.

Anyways, back to the clothes! The girl on the left has paired a solid navy cardigan and a white top with a teal front-button floral skirt. The girl in the middle is wearing a comfortable red tank, splattered 90's-style loose-fitting bottoms, and black leather lace-up booties. The girl on the right is wearing an almost angelic white flowy dress (similar to this white skirt I spotted previously) with worn, brown leather lace-up boots.

Fun fact: these girls are friends with Ms. Jordan Catalano from a few posts ago.

Ja, Paisley!

10/24/09
HASTE & TELEGRAPH
This outfit has all the workings of a Copenhagen Street Style post: cleverly-tied paisley scarf, natural grays, browns, and blues, single pants pleat, a leather satchel, and a pair of slightly oversized glasses. It works in Denmark; it works in Berkeley.

SLAM! POW! BAM!

100_1605
10/24/09
TELEGRAPH & DURANT
Let's just say that this girl knows a thing or two about color coordination. Taking notes from a previous post, she has made sure her hot-pink sandals match her comic book-esque checked and netted teal, yellow, and pink Vans sweatshirt. Lichtenstein would be proud.

Leaning like Jordan Catalano

100_1604
10/24/09
DURANT & TELEGRAPH
As I was walking down Durant, I noticed this girl leaning like Jordan Catalano, Jared Leto's character on the short-lived mid-90's drama called "My So-Called Life." (Here's a clip from the show; skip to 7:47 for his epic leaning.)

With a pearl tea in hand, she is wearing a plaid button-down, long dark t-shirt, vertical-striped black tights, and well-worn, self-decorated Keds sneakers. Her bone necklace, mixed beaded and braided bracelets, and tribal-inspired bag only accentuate her excellent personal style. The cool that comes from her drink's low temperature has clearly spread throughout her outfit.

The Name that Began the Game: Twitter's Biz Stone

10/24/09
WHEELER HALL
Continuing from my last post, this is a photograph I took of Twitter's Biz Stone at Y-Combinator's Startup School. When I asked to photograph his outfit, he jokingly said something along the lines of: "huh, I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt!"

Duly noted, Biz is wearing a well-fitting light-weight black jacket, black t-shirt, straight-legged jeans, and a pair of classic Converse All-Stars. I must apologize for the blurry photograph; star-struck-ness is not conducive to lucid photo-taking.

Here's a fun fact just for kicks: Biz Stone and Evan Williams both created Blogger and live in Berkeley.

The Feet that Started the Tweet: Twitter's Evan Williams

WHEELER HALL
Oh, man, do I have some posts for you! Today, I was fortunate enough to attend Y-Combinator'sStartup School in UC Berkeley's massive 800+ person Wheeler auditorium. Although marketed towards "hacker" types, I came as a blogger and aspiring entrepreneur. Some of the headliners that came to talk included Twitter's Evan Williams and Biz Stone, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, and Zappos' Tony Hsieh.

100_1600
I bring this up because I was able to photograph the men behind Twitter. Let me tell you: Evan Williams (pictured here) is quite a character. When I asked to take a picture of his shirt and shoes, he humorously pointed out that his belt, jeans, and maybe even his watch should be photographed, too.

He is wearing a clever hashtag t-shirt (or, rather, #shirt) with a pair of straight-legged jeans. His shoes have multi-colored stripes leading to the metal grommets and a swirling pattern on the toe caps. I apologize for the blurry photograph; I was clearly too star-struck to keep a steady hand.

If you're interested in reading about or watching the Twitter founders on stage, check out the live blog post on Digital Beat. There, you can also get a better view of Evan's shirt.

"The Sartorialist" Book Signing in San Francisco

100_1591
10/21/09
GEARY & GRANT
Boy was I excited when I read the man behind the "The Sartorialist" -- Scott Schuman -- was coming to town! Okay, more like ecstatic. And less like my town and more like San Francisco. (Tomatoes, potatoes.. carrots, onions.)

Anyways, I made the trek over the bay to catch some of the street-style action. And what do you know, I found a Cal student, getting a copy signed for her friend on the BARE Magazine staff! She was clad in a brilliant brocade cropped jacket, criss-crossing deep v-neck top, a pair of black high-waisted pants, a pair of stunning zipped heels, and tan elbow-length woven gloves. She's just asking to be Schuman's next subject.

I also attempted to capture a dapper, bow-tied gentleman (similar to this photo captured by The Fashionist), but the photo refused to come out. My apologies to him and you all for not being able to see his amazing outfit.

The Three Amigos

100_1571
10/21/09
MLK JR. STUDENT UNION
Although a bit confused when I approached them, these boys know what's up when it comes to dressing up. The boy on the left was wearing a plaid trench coat with an appropriately-popped collar, white button-down, probable J. Crew flag-embroidered chinos, and strap-y leather sandals. The middle man (har har) was wearing a button-down with a sky blue gingham twist with a baseball cap and patterned sneakers. The guy on the right decided to wear his checked button-down under a screen-printed long-sleeved shirt, completing the look with well-fitting black straight-legged pants and a pair of Nike kicks. If their stellar outfits don't get you, their priceless expressions will.

Saddled Up

10/21/09
SPROUL PLAZA
Basking in their post-midterm glory, these two girls were shuffling off of campus in a navy blazer and striped yellow and gray scarf, and a flowing pale purple dress, respectively. The added details of the matching leather-bound bag and hybrid moccasin saddle shoes on the left and the brilliant blue purse on the right give these looks an A+. Hopefully, they did this well on their exams.

Fedora the Explorer

SATHER GATE
This guy knows the meaning of suave. Just take a look at this carefully-picked out ensemble of a gray button-down, dark straight-legged jeans, clean brown jacket, sandy fedora, and classic black Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Definitely a good solution to our XY-chromosomal problem.

The Girl Who Knew How to Dress Business Casual

100_1568
10/21/09
MINOR HALL
Off to secure herself a summer internship at the campus internship fair, this girl has successfully revamped "business casual." Opting for a high-waisted, sailor-style buttoned skirt instead of a traditional pair of black slacks, she ties in a sharp black knot-tie blouse with a tailored-fit mustard coat, sleek heels, and a dual-colored purse. Based solely on this outfit, bring on the job offers!

Street Style Saturday

WEEK OF 10/11/09 - 10/17/09
Black Layers, Bold Prints, and Gold Brocade
As an avid fashion blog reader myself and blogger for BARE Magazine, I write a weekly top-ten blog links post called "Blogosphere's Week in Review." I recently had a "duh!" moment, realizing that I should make a street style version for this blog. Hence, Street Style Saturday was born. Here's this week's street fashion round-up:
So what'd ya think? Should I make Street Style Saturday's a recurring staple?

Bowler Shoes Revisited

100_1537
10/15/09
DURANT & TELEGRAPH
Contrary to the subject line, this girl was not off to knock down a few pins at the local bowling lanes. Shiny red leather meets calm gray suede, producing this awfully interesting combination. Bowling or not, these lace-ups are making their way to the top of my wish list.

Criss-crossing Bright Tights

100_1536
10/15/09
DURANT & TELEGRAPH
Walking by with headphones around her neck, this girl was wearing a cropped denim jacket, bow-tied black skirt, a pair of bright criss-cross pattern tights, and an old-fashioned key necklace. If her taste in music is anything like her obvious knack for style, I wouldn't mind jamming to her iTunes library.

GILMAN & 7TH
I spotted these lovely ladies at the Nasty Gal Sidewalk Sale. Immaculately epitomizing the Nasty Gal image, these girls were decked out in leather fringe and acid-washed denim jackets, sheer tights and ripped leggings, laced-up boots, and cool shades, respectively.

Seeing Red

10/8/09
SATHER GATE
Taking notes from one of my all-time favorite bloggers, Zana Bayne of Garbage Dress, this girl paired a black sequined top, leather jacket (1 & 2), and well-worn boots with a bright red mini to create a very eye-popping effect. The Chanel logo necklace doesn't hurt either.

Let's be frank. What's not to love about this outfit? If you're not sold by the crocodile-esque flats, the double-breasted strapless dress is sure to send you on your knees begging for more.

10/2/09: A Shot of Plaid at Bancroft Library

100_1503
10/2/09
BANCROFT LIBRARY
I've started to realize that this blog has become a bit demographically-challenged: the X-chromosomes exceedingly outweigh the Y's. So, I present you with this XY-chromosomal specimen. Although he is sporting a common Berkeley get-up, he has paid special attention to the cut of his plaid button-up and straight-legged pants, making sure they fit appropriately.
