Work It, Bloggers: Karis of Baybonnet

Karis is wearing a dress from Urban Outfitters, thrifted sweater, Jeffrey Campbell boots, Fossil bag, thrifted larger necklace, and triangular necklace by House of Harlow via Rocksbox.

What’s your name? Where do you live? What do you do?
My name is Karis and I live in Berkeley. I’m a business student at UC Berkeley entering my 3rd year, and this summer I’m interning at thredUP in San Francisco.

How did you get into blogging?
I’ve been following fashion blogs since I was in 8th grade. I think that’s when fashion really became a big part of my life. Second semester of my freshman year at Cal I just kinda said “I think I’m finally going to do this now” and so Baybonnet was born!

How would you describe your style?
I like to say that my style is Woodstock ’69 meets Woodstock ’94 because it’s a combination of boho and grunge styles. I draw a lot of inspiration from the 90s grunge scene since both my dad and I are really into those bands (I even have a tattoo of a Pearl Jam song lyric so the music nerdiness is real). However I’m also into all things flowy and covered in lace, which is more of a bohemian thing I suppose.

Do you have any style icons or inspirations?
I get most of my style inspiration from bloggers, Instagrammers, and YouTubers. My favorites are Jenn Im of clothesencounters, Michelle Ryu of @wickedtides, and Ashley Glorioso of purse 'n boots.

How has living in Dallas and studying in Berkeley influenced your style?
Dallas definitely has its own style that’s rather preppy and colorful. That’s really not me, and in high school I thought of myself as a bit of a rebel, so I think that I really explored a darker style then. I hate to say it but I think I reached peak fierceness my senior year of high school. I would wear these black lace maxi dresses, black creepers, velvet maroon pants, gory tee shirts, and a lot of other witchy stuff that earned me some weird looks from my classmates. I’ve definitely toned it down since then, and I think that living in Berkeley has inspired me to incorporate more bohemian pieces and neutral tones into my wardrobe.

What are some of your favorite places to shop in Berkeley?
Jeremys in Elmwood is my weakness! They have amazing prices on great brands and have huge sales on the weekends pretty often. While I’m over there I also like to check out Slash denim. They have really great Levi’s products and I bought an awesome vintage jacket there. I’m also a big frequenter of the Buffalo Exchange on Telegraph and the Urban Outfitters on Bancroft.

What do you like the most about blogging?
To me, styling outfits is a creative outlet. I’m not an artist by any means, but I do consider styling outfits to go up on my blog as an art form of sorts for me to indulge in. It’s fun for me to write about my life too. I’m not sure how many people are interested in my day to day life, but it’s nice to write it down sometimes to look back at later.

What have you learned from blogging?
Don’t worry if you have a huge following or not! If you enjoy blogging and putting out content but you and your 5 best friends are the only ones who see it- who cares? It’s a really good creative outlet, and if you're having fun, it's worth it.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?
When I’m not blogging I’m usually exploring San Francisco with my boyfriend, eating a pint of ice cream and watching weird YouTube videos with my awesome roommates, or Skyping with my family and friends back in Texas. I’m a very social person and most of my hobbies revolve around the people I love. Blogging is a great way for me to sit down and have some time to myself amidst all the chaos.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Well, you’ll be seeing a brand new website for starters! My boyfriend is a web developer and is going to design me a brand new site. I think that’s one of the things my blog is really lacking – a nice layout. I’m also hoping to post more, but I say that way too much! I’m hoping that a new design will help keep me motivated to reach that goal. Finally, I’m thinking about making weekly roundup posts highlighting some of my favorite things every week just so I can have some better reoccurring content.

Work It, Bloggers: Christopher of Unbearably Stylish

Christopher is wearing a Levi's shirt, pants, and boots, American Rag jacket, tie from ties.com, and thrifted belt.

What’s your name?
My name is Christopher Michael Gutierrez, but in the blogging world I go by Christopher Michael.

What do you do?
I am a student at the University of California, Berkeley and in my spare time I thoroughly enjoy fashion blogging.

How did you get into blogging?
I got started during the summer of 2014. My girlfriend, Jennifer Wang of the blog Art in Our Blood, was the person who encouraged and supported me to step behind the camera lens. She and her younger sister Michelle were a huge help in the process. They were also very helpful in the areas of photography, styling, social media, and blog design.

How would you describe your style?
I would say that my style would be classified as classy and dapper. The typical outfit includes a blazer, a button-up shirt, a tie, some jeans or dress pants. However, I usually wear casual clothing to school when I am not given enough time to prepare an outfit the day before.

Do you have any style icons or inspirations?
For menswear fashion inspiration I turn to the gurus of Instagram: Marcel Floruss from One Dapper Street, Steven Onoja, and Denny Balmaceda from Look Rich, Shop Cheap.

You’ve mentioned that your style is influenced by various types of media, such as novels, movies, television shows, and short stories. What’s your latest source of inspiration? Moreover, how do you translate these works into an outfit?
My latest source of inspiration was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I usually pay close attention to the setting in a story or work of fiction. For example, in The Great Gatsby, there is a scene in the garden where Jay Gatsby meets Nick Carraway. I was so inspired and marveled at the description of the passage that I felt that I had to locate a place on the Berkeley campus with similar structure. Additionally, I also take note of the items of clothing that these characters wear and how they groom themselves. I do my best to blend in those features with my own personal style.

What are some of your favorite places to shop in the East Bay?
Two of my favorite places to shop in the East Bay are Eco Thrift on Mission Blvd. and the Goodwill on Hesperian Boulevard. Those two are my go-to thrift shops. The prices are perfect and I always find something of great quality.

What do you like the most about blogging?
I like meeting new people and being able to inspire men and women to dress in formal attire. I also really like experimenting with new combinations and patterns.

What have you learned from blogging?
The blogging community is a highly competitive world.  It should not be a hobby taken too seriously. I learned that it is also very time-consuming, but in the long run it also is a powerful networking tool.

Also, standing behind the camera not knowing how your audience will react or react at all is nerve-wracking the first couple of posts, but soon you become exceedingly confident in yourself and the clothes you wear.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
For this summer, you can expect to see more relaxed looks on my blog, e.g. hopefully not as many outfits with ties. Perhaps I'll use a few cooler colors and incorporate graphic tees in my outfits.

You can follow Christopher on his blog, Facebook, and Instagram.

Now and Later: Kathleen Murillo

A denim fiend through and through: Kathleen as a toddler and Kathleen now, in front of Durant Hall at UC Berkeley

I'm excited to share a series that has been in the works for way too many months. I call it Now and Later. It's a look at how subjects used to dress growing up and how they dress now. I chose this name for the series as a ode to those chewy candy squares us 90's kids grew up on (or tossed out in favor of Reese's, in my case).

My first subject is no stranger to the blog. In fact, she's probably been on it more than anyone else; this is her fifth time to be exact. She deserves her own tag, alongside denim and booties. Without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to Kathleen Murillo, as a toddler and as an adult.

What's your name? What do you do? Where do you live? (In other words, A/S/L?)

Kathleen Murillo. I work in Finance at Kaiser Permanente. I live in the East Bay.

What was your style like as a kid? How would you describe it now?

At first, I'd describe my younger style as very girly in frilly cute and pink dresses, but as I've developed my own style, I believe it really started in middle school, I developed a greater love for fashion. In middle school I was into L.E.I., Limited Too, and in high school went on to American Eagle and Hollister. It has dramatically changed now -- as soon as I figured out what Zara was, I was more in tune with the trends of every season ;). I went from girly trendy to urban boho and carefree.

Did you have any style icons growing up? How about now?

Always my mom of course. She introduced me to thrift stores and finding unique designer pieces for amazing deals. Besides my mom, growing up I've also loved the Olsen twins -- when they were younger up until now, their style really grew with my style over the years. In particular, I've loved Mary Kate and her effortless boho style.

How has your approach to dressing changed?

I put a lot more thought into what I wear (as a result my room looks like a tornado passed through). I wear what I'm comfortable in -- before in middle school I was self-conscious and would wear what others were wearing instead of just dressing how I felt like. Also, I am more aware of texture and color -- I try to have more fun with these aspects of fashion when styling outfits.

See more of Kathleen on her blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube.

Want to be in the series? Let's make it happen.
